September featured student mentor—Bailey Dawson, Jr.

Our National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) mentor for September 2022 is Bailey Dawson, Jr., Senior Manager of Education Programs and Operations at the Georgia Aquarium, Inc. As Senior Manager of Education Programs and Operations, Bailey is responsible for leading the education department and overseeing all education programs. He is also in charge of maintaining the operational functions of the education department. He manages learning, grants, partnerships, and professional development for the aquarium and staff. Bailey has been in the education world for 14 years and at the Aquarium 3 1/2 years. When asked what he loves most about his job, Bailey replied,

“My favorite aspect of the job is seeing the amazement on kids’ faces when they walk into the Aquarium.”

Bailey earned a Bachelor of Science B.S. in Health Education from Alabama State University, Masters in Instructional Technology from Kennesaw State University, and ED. S in Educational Leadership from Kennesaw State University. When asked why he selected these schools/programs, Bailey responded, “Both of my parents were Alabama State University graduates. Therefore, I felt a connection to the school. Kennesaw State had a great education program that I felt would help we further my career.”

When asked what advice he would give to his younger self, Bailey replied,

“Keep your options open. You never know what your life experiences will prepare you for later in life. Make as many personal connections as possible because people play a huge role in your success.”

Bailey adds, “Be ok with being different. It’s ok to be uncomfortable. You find out the most about yourself when you are out in uncomfortable situations.”
