Do you want to attend the 2018 NMEA Conference in Long Beach, CA, and could you use some financial assistance to attend? There are currently three different types of scholarships available: NMEA member-only scholarships, Expanding Audiences scholarships, and Traditional Knowledge scholarships.

All scholarship nominations and applications are due on March 15, and notifications will be made by April 15, so that everyone can register by the 2018 NMEA conference registration early-bird deadline!

Please note: scholarship awardees in all categories have 90 days after the last day of the conference to submit their paperwork and receipts to receive the scholarship.

Member-only Scholarships

The scholarship program was created by the NMEA Board of Directors in 1995 to assist members in attending the annual conference. Scholarship awards are available for NMEA members living in the U.S. or abroad. The annual NMEA auction, held at each annual conference, provides partial funding for these scholarships. Applicants must be NMEA members in good standing. Chapter membership is a plus, but not required.

Expanding Audiences Scholarships

A strategic goal of NMEA is to increase the number of members who represent and/or educate underrepresented minorities including, but not limited to people of color, indigenous people, island people, international communities, inland areas, and English-language learners. In 2009, the NMEA Board of Directors recommended that the Expanding Audience Committee establish a program to recruit and assist individuals from groups underrepresented in science, or those who serve under-represented or under-served audiences, to help facilitate the realization of that goal. The intent is to support qualified individuals to share their expertise, experiences and perspectives through active participation in NMEA Annual Conferences and the creation of a product that will benefit the larger marine and aquatic education community. Current or past NMEA members are not eligible for this scholarship. Any current NMEA member may nominate an interested candidate for the scholarship. Self-nominations are also encouraged and welcome. Traditional Knowledge Scholarship

The Traditional Knowledge Stipend was instituted by the NMEA Board of Directors in 2009 to assist cultural practitioners and experts of indigenous traditional knowledge who are interested in promoting the recognition, understanding, and respect of traditional knowledge and rights as it relates to marine resources and ecosystems (both fresh and salt water) in attending the NMEA Annual Conferences. There is an annual $1,000 stipend available to help cover the costs of the conference registration, travel, accommodations, and other expenses. Applicants should be cultural practitioners or experts of indigenous traditional knowledge who are willing to share their expertise to help promote the goals and objectives of the NMEA Traditional Knowledge Committee.
