Laura DiederickDirector (2017–2020)

Growing up outside Cleveland, Ohio, Laura and a childhood friend made a pact to move to Florida after high school and work towards becoming marine biologists. Her path to marine science was not quite that direct, but 14 years after concocting that plan Laura accepted a position with the Smithsonian Marine Station in Fort Pierce, Florida. During her time at the Smithsonian she has worn many hats within the realm of informal science, spending most of the past eight years collaborating with researchers on outreach and engagement. She has been a member of the Florida Marine Science Educators Association for 12 years, serving the organization for 10 years in various board roles.

A member of NMEA since 2006, Laura first joined organizational leadership in 2012 as the first chair of the newly formed Social Media Committee. She went on to lead the Communications Super Committee for a time, and has served this past year as a member of the Executive Committee. Laura spent much of her first term as a director co-chairing the 2016 annual conference in Orlando, Florida. She has recently accepted a new position as a NOAA contractor and looks forward to joining her friends in the region as a member of MAMEA.  "NMEA has played an invaluable role in my personal and professional growth," Laura said. "I welcome the opportunity to continue to play a role in our organization's leadership and give back to a community I hold dear."
