Kanesa holds a BS in biology, an MS in zoology, a PhD in zoology (for work studying scalloped hammerhead sharks), a post-baccalaureate education certificate in secondary science education, and a secondary science credential for the state of Hawaii.

Kanesa has been PI/Co-PI of a U.S. Department of Education funded Teaching Aquatic Science as Inquiry professional development program for middle and high school teachers and the NSF Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence – Island Earth. Her current projects include (a) Exploring Our Fluid Earth, a freely-available aquatic science curriculum (, (b) a revision of the elementary NOAA ‘Sea.Earth.Atmosphere.’ curriculum, (c) a citizen science research project, Our Project in Hawaii’s Intertidal, with students, teachers, and undergraduates. Kanesa is also the producer and host of the Voice of the Sea television show, which profiles ocean scientists and cultural experts. Kanesa is a past board member, chapter representative, and president of OCEANIA, the NMEA Hawaii and Pacific chapter. As a current NMEA Board Member, Kanesa enjoys attending the annual NMEA gatherings around the country in large part because they provide an opportunity to visit a variety of coastal areas and learn about the local culture, research, and education. The NMEA annual conferences also provide the opportunity to share about her own work and to learn how colleague’s work is progressing. Perhaps most important, NMEA facilitates connections with long-time friends and the making of new ones! Kanesa’s daughter has attended each NMEA annual conference since she was 1 year old, and watching her grow up with NMEA is truly a gift!

In her free time, Kanesa is an ocean athlete who enjoys traditional, prone paddleboarding and bodyboarding. Kanesa lives on the island of Kauai with her husband Thor, step daughter AnaBella, and toddler Laola.
