NMEA 2018 Events Schedule

Grunion Run!

NMEA and NMEA families are invited to attend a Grunion Run event.

Grunion are a small silverside fish with interesting behaviors- they make their way onto the beach to spawn!  It's a sight to behold. We invite you to join us for an education program and then a beach walk to search for spawning grunions.

Saturday, July 14, 2018
  • 8:45 pm - Meet near QM valet stand (ground floor, outside) if you need a ride
  • 9:00 pm - Shuttles (private vehicles) will depart QM
  • 9:30 pm - Grunion Run at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium

Event is FREE but parking is $1 an hour. Please dress in layers!

No food provided, but snacks will be for sale. Please dress in layers- southern California can be cool at night, especially down by the beach. This program has both indoor and outdoor elements.

Aquarium of the Pacific Night

Free for NMEA registrants! Guest tickets can be purchased with registration. Bring your badge and lanyard! Guests will have a bracelet in your registration packet.

Please wear your conference badge for admission! Guests have been issued a bracelet; check your registration packet if you purchased guest tickets.

  • 5:45 pm - Meet to walk to boat at the R Deck Stairs (near stern) that go down to parking lot
  • 6:00 pm - First boat leaves for Aquarium of the Pacific from Catalina Classic Cruisers at the Queen Mary dock
  • 6:15 pm - Meet to walk to boat at the R Deck Stairs (near stern) that go down to parking lot
  • 6:30 pm - Second boat leaves for Aquarium of the Pacific from Catalina Classic Cruisers at Queen Mary dock
  • 6 -10 pm - Event Aquarium of the Pacific (see below for details!)
  • 10:00 pm - First boat returning to Queen Mary Departing from Pierpoint Landing (Aquarium of the Pacific)
  • 10:30 pm - Second boat returning to Queen Mary Departing from Pierpoint Landing (Aquarium of the Pacific)

At the Aquarium of the Pacific, we'll be featuring: tiny tours of our LEED platinum watershed exhibit and classroom, our vet hospital, animal meet and greets, a sneak peek behind the scenes, and more!

If you purchased beads for Heads or Tails, bring them for a chance to win a GREAT PRIZE!

If you haven't purchased beads yet, you can do that at the Aquarium of the Pacific for $5.


NMEA Auction and Gala

Free for NMEA registrants! Guest tickets can be purchased with registration.

Please bring your meal tickets from your registration packet!

  • 6:30 pm - Silent Auction and cocktails (drink tokens and cash bar) in the Windsor Salon
  • 7:30 pm - Seated Dinner (bring your meal ticket from Registration Packet!), Live Auction with Auctioneer John Kunkle in the Grand Salon 
  • 9:00 pm - Paddle Raise and Dancing and music with (dj)misterbill

For those participating in the auction, we will provide check-out all evening! Credit cards will be accepted.


Cabrillo Beach Bash

This is a ticketed event. Tickets can be purchased with registration.

Cabrillo Marine Aquarium

Please bring your conference badge to board the bus!

  • 5:30 pm - Meet to walk to bus on the Ground floor, near Queen Mary valet stand
  • 5:45 pm - Bus departs Queen Mary to head to Cabrillo Marine Aquarium  
  • 6:15 pm - Cabrillo Beach Bash! (See below for details)
  • 9:15 pm - Bus departs Cabrillo Marine Aquarium to head to Queen Mary from Cabrillo's front plaza

We have plans to explore the coastal park, including salt marsh, tidepool, and sandy beach habitats. We'll have behind-the-scene tour options, a chance to see our white abalone, as well as activities such as gyotoku and grunion egg hatching set-up around the aquarium.

Dinner from local vegan restaurant, SeaBirds, and food from It's Zaul Good will be followed by s'mores and a campfire in the courtyard. Beer will be provided by our own Brouwerij West.
